Local SEO services help a business with a real location or service area appear in Google's map pack and "near me" results. The work is a complete, verified Google Business Profile, accurate categories, the same name, address and phone everywhere, genuine reviews, a page for each location or service area, and LocalBusiness schema. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and you cannot pay for a better position.
01What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work of making a business show up when people search for a product or service in a specific place, such as "dentist in Maadi", "emergency plumber" or "coffee near me". These searches often show a map with three businesses (the "map pack") above the organic results.
Two assets do the work. Your Google Business Profile is what appears in the map pack and on Google Maps. Your website supports the profile and ranks in the organic results below it. Good local SEO services treat both as one system.
| Local SEO | General SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Main result | Map pack, Google Maps, "near me" searches | Organic blue links, AI answers |
| Main asset | Google Business Profile plus location pages | Website content and links |
| Who it suits | Shops, clinics, restaurants, trades, offices with local customers | Any business, including online-only |
| What limits you | Distance from the searcher, which you cannot change | Competition and content quality |
| Key risk | Profile suspension for breaking Google's guidelines | Ranking drops after updates or bad links |
If you sell online to anyone, anywhere, you need general SEO more than local SEO. Our guide to what SEO services include covers that side.
02How does Google rank local results?
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. It combines them, so a business farther away can still outrank a closer one if Google judges it more relevant or better known.
| Factor | What Google means | What you can do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches what the person searched for | Pick precise categories, describe your real services, keep every field complete |
| Distance | How far your business is from the searcher, or from the location in the search | Nothing directly. Do not fake addresses to get closer |
| Prominence | How well known your business is, online and offline | Earn genuine reviews, reply to them, get mentioned and linked by local sites, keep your website strong |
Google names the number of websites that link to your business, how many reviews you have and your ratings among the signals for prominence. That is why work on your website and local links feeds your map ranking, not just work on the profile.
03The local SEO checklist: 12 steps in order
Work through this local SEO checklist in order: the first steps fix foundations, the later ones build prominence over months.
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Google says verified businesses are more likely to show for relevant searches. Use an email address the business owns, and add any agency as a manager, not an owner.
- Use your real-world business name. It must match your signage, website and stationery. No taglines, no city names, no "best", no service keywords added on.
- Choose the fewest, most specific categories. Your primary category should complete the sentence "This business IS a…". "Pediatric dentist" beats "Dentist" if that is what you are. Services you offer are not categories.
- Enter a precise address, or hide it if you are a service-area business. P.O. boxes and virtual offices are not eligible. Co-working desks only qualify with signage, staff and customer reception during your hours.
- Set opening hours and special hours. Keep holiday hours accurate. Businesses that work by appointment only should not list regular hours.
- Add a local phone number you control. Google prefers a number that rings at the location, not a central call centre. No premium-rate numbers and no numbers that forward to another business.
- Link the right page on your website. A single-location business links its home page. A multi-location business links each profile to its own location page.
- Fill in services, products, attributes, photos and the description. Use real photos. Links are not allowed in the description.
- Make your name, address and phone (NAP) identical everywhere. Check your site footer, contact page, social profiles, maps apps and main local directories.
- Ask every customer for a review, and reply to all of them. Same request, same timing, for happy and unhappy customers alike. See the review rules below before you start.
- Build one strong page per location or service area. Each page needs the real address or area, opening hours, the services offered there, local photos, directions and an embedded map. Do not clone one page and swap the city name.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data and track results. Mark up each location page with JSON-LD, then watch calls, direction requests and website clicks in your profile's Performance report, and local queries in Google Search Console.
04Google Business Profile optimization: what actually moves the needle
Google Business Profile optimization means making the profile complete, accurate and active, inside Google's rules. Google's own tips are short: complete every field, verify, keep hours accurate, respond to reviews, and add photos and videos.
| Field | Do | Don't |
|---|---|---|
| Business name | Exact real-world name | Add keywords, cities or slogans |
| Primary category | The single most specific match | Pick a broad one because it "gets more searches" |
| Extra categories | Only what the business IS | List services or businesses you share a building with |
| Description | Plain explanation of what you do and for whom | Paste links, prices that change, or keyword lists |
| Photos | Real exterior, interior, team and finished work | Stock images or other businesses' photos |
| Hours | Regular and special hours, kept current | Leave holiday hours wrong |
| Reviews | Reply to every review, good and bad, within days | Argue, reveal customer details, or reply with copy-paste text |
05How to get reviews without breaking Google's rules
You may ask customers for reviews, but you may not pay for them, offer anything in return, or ask only the happy ones. Google's policy for Maps content treats these as fake engagement and removes them.
What Google's policy rules out:
- Paying for reviews, in cash or in kind.
- Offering discounts, free products or services in exchange for a review, or for changing or removing a negative one.
- Selectively asking satisfied customers while avoiding unhappy ones (often called "review gating").
- Reviews from staff, former staff, relatives, or anyone with a conflict of interest.
- Reviews posted from several accounts by one person, or sudden unusual bursts.
In the United States, the FTC finalised a rule in August 2024 banning fake reviews, paid reviews with a set sentiment, undisclosed insider reviews and review suppression, with civil penalties for knowing violators. Check your own country's consumer law.
A safe system: send every customer the same short message with your review link, and reply to every review.
06Local pages and LocalBusiness schema
Each location or service area you want to rank for needs its own useful page, and that page should carry LocalBusiness structured data. Schema does not make you rank on its own; it helps Google read your details correctly.
Google's documentation lists name and address as required. These are the properties worth adding:
| Property | Status in Google's docs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
name | Required | Same as your Business Profile |
address | Required | Full postal address, as many fields as possible |
telephone | Recommended | Include country and area code |
url | Recommended | The specific location page, not just the home page |
geo | Recommended | Latitude and longitude, at least five decimal places |
openingHoursSpecification | Recommended | Match the hours on your profile |
priceRange | Recommended | Under 100 characters, such as "$$" |
@type | Choose the most specific | Use a subtype such as Dentist, Restaurant or Plumber from schema.org; list several if needed |
Two traps. Google only recommends aggregateRating and review on LocalBusiness for sites that collect reviews of other businesses, so do not mark up your own testimonials as star ratings. And use JSON-LD, which is the format in all of Google's examples, then test the page in the Rich Results Test.
07Local SEO for service-area businesses
A service-area business, such as a plumber, cleaner or mobile mechanic, should have one profile for its base, with the address hidden and a service area set. Google's guidelines say a service area should not extend beyond roughly two hours' driving time from where you are based, with some exceptions.
- You can add up to 20 service areas, by city, postal code or district.
- If you do not receive customers at your address, remove it from public view. Do not list a home address as a shopfront.
- Do not create a separate profile for each city you serve. Build a service-area page on your website for each important area instead.
- A service area helps people find you, but it does not guarantee you will appear for searches across that whole area. Distance still counts.
08Mistakes that get a Google Business Profile suspended
Most suspensions come from a handful of violations of Google's guidelines for representing your business. Google says it may suspend access to profiles that break them, and a non-compliant name alone can lead to suspension.
| Mistake | Why it is a problem | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords in the business name ("Ali Dental Clinic Best Teeth Whitening Cairo") | Names must match the real-world name | Use the name on your sign |
| Virtual office or P.O. box address | Not eligible for a profile | Use a real staffed location, or become a service-area business |
| Several profiles for one business | Google's guidelines call for only one profile per business | Merge or remove duplicates |
| Fake locations to cover more cities | Not a real place customers can visit | Use one profile and service areas |
| Phone that forwards to a lead-gen line or another business | Number must be under your direct control | Use your own local number |
| Website link pointing to a social page or third-party site | Must represent your own business | Link your own site |
| Bought or incentivised reviews | Removed as fake engagement; can lead to restrictions | Ask every customer the same way, with no reward |
If you are suspended, fix the cause first, then use Google's official reinstatement request in the Business Profile help centre. Do not create a new profile to replace the suspended one.
09What local SEO services include, and what they cost
A proper local SEO service covers the whole checklist above, then keeps it maintained month after month.
| Deliverable | One-off or ongoing | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO audit (profile, NAP, site, competitors in the map pack) | One-off | A written list of problems, ranked by impact |
| Google Business Profile setup and clean-up | One-off, then checked monthly | Correct name, category, hours, photos, services |
| Citation and NAP clean-up | One-off, then as needed | A list of listings fixed |
| Location or service-area pages | Ongoing | New or rewritten pages, live on your site |
| LocalBusiness schema | One-off per page | A passing Rich Results Test |
| Review process and replies | Ongoing | A review request message and replies on every review |
| Local links and mentions | Ongoing | Named local sites, partners or press that link to you |
| Monthly report | Ongoing | Calls, direction requests, website clicks, local queries, leads |
Prices for local SEO services vary widely by market, number of locations and how much content and link work is included. Ask any provider for a written list of monthly deliverables and the metrics they will report, so you are comparing like with like.
No one can promise a timeline to the top three. Google's own SEO guidance says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking.
10Choosing a local SEO provider
Judge a provider by what they will do inside Google's rules and how they will prove it. A good one refuses to stuff your business name or invent locations, keeps the profile in your name, reports in calls and leads, and shows dated results, such as our traffic-drop case study, where top-three keywords rose from 777 to 4,300. How much do local SEO services cost?
Prices vary widely by market, number of locations and how much content and link work is included. As a reference, Win Market Agency's SEO service, which covers local SEO, is USD 500 per month, and the first audit is free. Always ask for a written list of monthly deliverables.
Can I do local SEO myself?
Yes. Every step in the checklist above can be done by the owner. An agency saves time and helps with schema, content and local links.
How do I rank in the Google map pack?
Complete and verify your Google Business Profile, choose the most specific primary category, keep your NAP consistent, earn genuine reviews and build location pages. Google ranks on relevance, distance and prominence; you cannot pay for a better position.
Does adding keywords to my business name help local SEO?
It may seem to help for a while, but it breaks Google's guidelines, which require your real-world name. Google says a non-compliant name can lead to suspension of your Business Profile.
Can a business without a shopfront do local SEO?
Yes. A service-area business can hide its address, set up to 20 service areas, and still appear in local results. Google says the area should generally be within about two hours' drive of your base. Build a page on your website for each main area you serve.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Fixes to categories, missing details and inconsistent listings can show within weeks. Building prominence through reviews, local pages and links takes months, and depends on how competitive your area is. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a timeline or a ranking.
