SEO Services: What's Included and What They Should Cost

The short answer

SEO services are the work of making a website easier for search engines and AI assistants to crawl, understand and recommend: technical fixes, on-page optimisation, content built on real searches, earning links from relevant sites, local listings, and monthly reporting in traffic and leads. A fair provider puts each of these in writing, with a monthly scope, a price and a way for you to check the work.

01What do SEO services include?

SEO services cover six areas of work plus reporting, and a complete service touches all of them, even if the weight shifts from month to month. Google's own page on hiring an SEO lists reviewing site content and structure, technical advice, content development, keyword research, market expertise and optimising for generative AI among the things a provider may do.

AreaWhat the work isWhat you should be able to see
Technical SEOCrawling, indexing, site speed, mobile layout, redirects, broken pages, structured data, sitemapsA list of issues found, fixed and still open
On-page SEOTitles, descriptions, headings, internal links, page purpose matched to one search intentBefore and after for each page changed
ContentKeyword research, new pages and articles, rewriting weak pagesEach piece with its target query and publish date
Links and digital PREarning links and mentions from relevant, real sitesEach new referring domain, named, with the page it links to
Local SEOGoogle Business Profile, location pages, consistent name, address and phoneProfile changes, photos, posts and review replies
AI search visibilityMaking pages quotable and accessible to AI crawlers, clear answers, entity factsCrawler access checked, pages that appear in AI answers
ReportingSearch Console and analytics data, rankings, leads and sales from organic searchOne report a month, the same metrics every time

If a proposal leaves out a whole row, ask why. Sometimes there is a good reason: a small site that already loads fast needs little technical work. Often the row is missing because it is the expensive part.

02What a month of SEO work looks like

A typical month of SEO services has a fixed rhythm: check the site's health, fix what broke, publish or improve content, earn links, and report. The first three months usually carry more technical and research work; after that the weight moves to content and links.

Ask any provider to fill this table in for your site before you sign. The numbers they write in it, such as pages fixed or articles published, are what you hold them to.

How long until results show? Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes "might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months". Plan for months, and judge the first quarter on work delivered and early movement in Search Console, not on final rankings.

AI search visibility is part of good SEO, not a separate product you must buy. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, the same rules as ordinary search. Nothing extra such as special schema or new AI files is required.

What a provider should actually do here:

  • Check crawler access. OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot crawler is what surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt. Many sites block AI crawlers by accident through a firewall or CDN setting.
  • Write answer-first pages. Each section opens with a sentence that answers its heading, so a search engine or assistant can quote it.
  • Make the facts consistent. Your name, address, services and prices should match across your site, your Google Business Profile and other listings.
  • Keep structured data truthful. Google asks that it match the visible text on the page.

If someone sells "AI SEO" as a costly extra but cannot explain what it does beyond these points, ask for specifics. For a deeper look, see our guide to ChatGPT SEO.

04How SEO services are priced

SEO services are sold in three main ways: a monthly retainer, a fixed project fee, or an hourly rate. Prices vary widely between countries, providers and site sizes, so the model matters as much as the number.

ModelHow it worksBest forWatch out for
Monthly retainerFixed fee for ongoing work each monthMost businesses that want steady growthA fee with no written monthly scope
Project feeOne price for a defined jobSite migrations, audits, one-off clean-upsWork stops at hand-over; no one tracks the effect
HourlyYou pay for time usedAdvice, training, a second opinionHard to predict the total cost
Performance-basedFee tied to rankings or trafficRarely a good fitEncourages short-term tricks and vanity keywords

Whichever model you choose, ask four questions about the quote:

  1. What exactly is delivered each month? Pages, articles, fixes and outreach, written as numbers.
  2. What costs extra? Content writing, tools, paid placements and developer time are often outside the fee.
  3. Who owns the work? Content, accounts and Search Console access should stay in your name.
  4. How do I leave? Notice period, hand-over of files and access, and no penalty for ending.

05What "affordable SEO services" really means

Affordable SEO services are ones where the price matches a written scope you can verify, delivered without tactics that put your site at risk. Cheap is a different thing: a low price paid for work you cannot see, or work that damages the site.

A very low monthly fee has to come from somewhere. Usually it comes from one of three places:

  • No real work. A template report with rankings for keywords nobody searches.
  • Automated or bulk content. Pages produced at scale with little value. Google's spam policies call this scaled content abuse.
  • Bought links. Google's spam policies list "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as link spam, along with links from automated services and widely distributed footer links.

The third one is the most common and the hardest for a business owner to notice, because the report shows a number going up.

The clearest sign of cheap link building is a large number of backlinks coming from very few domains. We saw this on a property site that came to us after paying another provider every month: it had 841,000 backlinks from only 36 referring domains. That is about 23,000 links per domain, the shape you get when someone places a link in the footer of every page on a small network of sites.

The monthly report said backlinks were rising, which was true. The site had 39 organic visits a month.

We cleaned the profile first, disavowed the harmful domains, fixed the technical foundation, and built content and real links. Over time the site grew to around 200,000 monthly organic visits, ranking keywords rose from 681 to 69,700, and referring domains from 36 to 1,230. The full story, including what we refused to do, is in the link profile case study.

A second pattern looks different but comes from the same place: links rising while rankings fall. One site was losing 21,000 keywords in 30 days while its link count kept climbing. After we changed the work, ranking keywords went from 54,900 to 102,000 and top-three keywords from 777 to 4,300 (traffic drop case study).

The five-minute link check you can run yourself

  1. Open Google Search Console. Go to the Links report and look at "Top linking sites". It is free and comes from Google.
  2. Compare links to sites. Many thousands of links from a handful of sites is the warning sign. A natural profile has many different sites, each linking a few times.
  3. Open the top three linking sites. If they are unrelated to your business, or their pages are full of links to other companies, that is paid or automated linking.
  4. Ask your provider one question. "How many different domains did this month's new links come from, and can you name them?"
  5. Compare with traffic. If links rise every month and organic visits in Search Console do not, the links are not doing the job you are paying for.

07Red flags in an SEO services proposal

Google's guidance on hiring an SEO is blunt: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." It also warns against providers who offer "priority submit", claim a special relationship with Google, or will not explain what they do. You remain responsible for what a hired company does to your site.

Red flagWhy it matters
Guaranteed first place or a fixed traffic numberNo one controls Google's rankings
A set number of backlinks per month for a low priceUsually bought or automated links
No access to your Search Console or analyticsYou cannot check the work
Reports with rankings only, never leads or salesRankings for the wrong words pay nothing
Long contract with no exit and no written scopeYou cannot leave when it is not working
Content you do not own if you leaveYou pay twice to rebuild

08SEO services near me, or a remote provider?

Searching "SEO services near me" makes sense if you want to meet in person, but an SEO provider's location does not affect your rankings. What matters is whether they understand your market, your language and your customers' searches.

Google's local ranking depends on three things: relevance, distance and prominence, where distance means how far your business is from the person searching. It is not about where your agency sits. Google also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

QuestionLocal providerRemote provider
MeetingsIn personVideo calls
Knows your cityOften, from living thereHas to learn it; ask for examples
PriceTied to local costsCan be lower for the same work
Language and dialectUsually matchesCheck samples in your language
ChoiceLimited to who is nearbyMuch wider

Choose a local provider if face-to-face meetings matter to you or your city has a very particular market. Choose remote if you want a wider choice and can work over calls. Either way, run the same checks. If your main goal is the map pack and Google Business Profile, our local SEO services guide goes deeper.

09A checklist for comparing SEO quotes

Score each quote from 0 to 2 on every line: 0 for missing, 1 for vague, 2 for written and specific.

CheckScore (0–2)

Covers technical, on-page, content and links
Link building method explained, no paid links
AI search and crawler access included
Reports in traffic, leads and sales from Search Console and analytics
You own the content, accounts and data

A quote that scores 12 or more out of 16 is worth a conversation. Below 10, ask for the gaps to be filled in writing before you compare prices.

?Frequently asked questions

What do SEO services include?

SEO services include technical fixes, on-page optimisation, keyword research and content, earning links from relevant sites, local SEO such as Google Business Profile, AI search visibility, and monthly reporting. A good provider writes each one into the monthly scope.

How much should SEO services cost per month?

It varies widely by country, site size and competition. Judge the price against a written monthly scope, not on its own. As a reference, Win Market Agency charges USD 500 per month for SEO, and the audit is free.

Are affordable SEO services worth it?

Yes, if the price matches a written scope you can verify and the provider avoids bought links and bulk content. A low price with no visible work, or with a fixed number of backlinks each month, usually costs more later.

How do I find good SEO services near me?

Search for providers, then judge them on proof of results in your market, a written scope and clear reporting. Location matters for meetings, not rankings: Google's local ranking depends on where your business is, not where your agency is.

How long does it take for SEO services to work?

Google says some changes can show within hours and others take several months. Expect the first three months to focus on fixes and research, and judge them on work delivered and early movement in Search Console.

Can an SEO company guarantee first place on Google?

No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and warns against providers who promise it.

Do I need separate services for AI search like ChatGPT?

Not usually. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews beyond normal Search eligibility. Make sure AI crawlers such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot are allowed and your pages give clear, quotable answers.
